在班戈學院2015新生開學典禮上的講話
班戈大學校長約翰·休斯教授

尊敬的中南林業科技大學校長、各位來賓、女士們、先生們：
中南林業科技大學班戈學院是班戈大學在中國的特殊而又振奮人心的發展項目。
班戈大學成立于1884年，距今已有超過130年的歷史，是英國最古老的大學之一，在科研、學術成就和教學質量方面長期保持著良好記錄。在最新一期的“泰晤士報全英大學排行榜”中，班戈排名全英前50。在今年的英國學生滿意度調查中，我們也表現得非常好：綜合評分繼續保持在91%。這意味著我們已經連續兩年蟬聯威爾士第1、英國前10 的排名榜。班戈有很多知名的校友，比如：諾貝爾獎獲得者羅伯特·愛德華茲和丹尼·博伊爾，他是2008年奧斯卡最佳影片《貧民窟的百萬富翁》的導演，被譽為“西方的張藝謀”。班戈的很多課程在英國排名很高，尤其是會計學和金融學、心理學，電子工程學和林學。班戈的地理位置也十分優越，坐落于巍峨的斯諾登尼亞國家森林公園、美麗的安格爾西島和愛爾蘭海之間，風景十分秀美。我們的國際學生有2000多名，來自世界上150多個國家，因此校園文化也是多種多樣，十分豐富。
班戈的中國學生畢業歸國就業率一直很高。目前，在班戈校區和商學院倫敦中心就讀的中國學生超過750人，涵蓋了所有課程級別和多個學科。其中，商業和金融領域的學生最多，但也有很多學生在學習科學、工程、文學、法律、音樂、教育和心理學方面的課程。這些學生都非常努力且天資聰穎，在班戈學習期間都取得了很好的成績。他們中的許多人已經回到中國，在金融、工程、媒體（包括電視臺）等領域成功就業，還有很多人甚至成立了自己的企業，事業做得風生水起。
對于班戈大學來說，像班戈學院這樣能夠在中國提供正式大學學位課程的學院還是第一次，這對我們具有戰略意義上的重要性，影響深遠。班戈大學與中南林業科技大學合作，為學生提供四個學位課程：銀行與金融理學學士課程、會計與金融理學學士課程、電子工程理學學士課程和林業和環境管理理學學士課程。授課教師分別來自班戈和中南林，他們都是充滿教學熱忱且經驗豐富的優秀教師。經過過去一年的努力，我很高興看到班戈學院已取得了令人驚訝的成績。從今年9月起，我們已有264名大二的學生在班戈大學注冊，成為了班戈大學的學生。恭喜你們！你們現在不僅是中南林的學生，也是班戈的學生了！我也很高興看到有180多名新生即將在此開始你們的大一生活，希望你們能夠學業有成，明年也能成為班戈大學的學生！
過去三年，班戈大學在班戈學院的建設上投入了大量的人力、財力。班戈大學一定要確保班戈學院的教學質量，做到在教學標準、評估方法和學生體驗與班戈大學本部完全一致。
本學年，班戈大學學聯和班戈學院的學生會將會有很多互動。現任班戈大學學聯主席將于11月拜訪班戈學院，與大家見面。班戈學院負責學生工作的領導也將于今年晚些時候訪問班戈。雙方將探討如何將班戈學院學生融入班戈本部學生的種種活動中來。我希望通過這些活動，兩個校區的同學們能夠成為好朋友、互相交流學習和生活體驗。我相信很多英國學生將通過班戈學院了解中國。作為班戈大學，我們希望將班戈學院作為班戈大學的海外留學基地，實現真正的雙向交流，提高所有學生的學習體驗。
毫無疑問，科研合作也是工作重點。我們雙方已經在中國和亞洲研究、林業和環境科學等領域建立了科研聯系。
班戈學院為中國學生提供了一次難得的機遇，讓大家無需出國即可享受到國際化的教育。這一點無論是對學生、家庭和各個大學都是非常具有吸引力的，可推廣的范例。你們享有這兩個大學的精華——既有具有國際水準的學者為你們授課，又無需花費在海外生活的高額費用。
中國在當今的世界政治和經濟舞臺上發揮著越來越大的作用。需要上百萬具有高技能、受過良好教育且具有國際眼光的年輕人，以助其實現成為世界領先國家的目標。國際化的教育對于現在所有的年輕人來說就是通往成功的必經之路。而班戈學院以課程質量和學生為核心，恰恰提供了這樣一個既高端又經濟的范本。
我們的課程都是經過了精心設計和安排，以保證同學們可以選擇在長沙的班戈學院學習兩年或三年后轉到英國的班戈大學本部學習。你們可以在每學年初選擇轉換校區。只要你們達到班戈本科學位課程畢業成績要求，我們將保證錄取你們去班戈大學讀研究生。希望你們在長沙學習兩到三年后，來班戈體驗西方古老世界的神秘。你可以在哈利波特式的圖書館里學習，在建于19世紀的PJ廳里聽音樂會，在愛爾蘭海的白色沙灘上燒烤，吃飽了還能順便在海里游個泳。當然，你也可以參加班戈大學國際學生處組織的周末游覽團，去利物浦、切斯特、曼徹斯特等大城市觀光。
今年夏天，我在班戈大學見到了來自班戈學院的23名同學。他們在班戈大學的表現非常出色。希望他們能喜歡在班戈和英國的那段經歷。
我衷心祝賀大家學業有成，希望在不久的將來能在班戈大學見到你們。

President, Distinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen
Bangor College Changsha is an exciting and special development for Bangor University in China.
Bangor is one of the oldest universities in the UK having been founded 130 years ago in 1884. It has a long and distinguished record of research and scholarship and teaching excellence. We rank in the top 50 universities in the UK in the latest Times university league tables. We have done wonderfully well in the National Students Survey this year – maintaining our score of 91% overall satisfaction, which means we are top 10in the UK and the best in Wales in the 2015 for the second year running. The University has many famous alumni including the Nobel Prize Winner, Robert Edwards and Danny Boyle who is regarded as the Zhang Yimou of the west. Many of our subjects are highly ranked in the UK, especially Accounting and Finance, Psychology, Electronic Engineering and Forestry. The University is situated inan area of outstanding natural beauty, between Snowdonia National Park, the beautiful island of Anglesey and the Irish Sea. We have a very multicultural campus with more than 2,000 international students from more than 150 countries.
Bangor has a successful track record in working in China. More than 750 Chinese students are currently studying in Bangor and in our London Campus at all levels and across many subject disciplines. Many are in the business and finance areas, but also in science, engineering, literature, law, music, education and psychology. They are hard-working, talented students who achieve a great deal during their time in Bangor. Many have returned to China and are enjoying successful careers in areas such as finance, engineering or media (including TV), and many have setup their own businesses.
A dedicated Bangor College offering full degrees in China is a first for the University. It is a strategically important project to Bangor and will last for decades. Together with CSUFT, we offer four programmes including BSc in Banking and Finance; BSc in Accounting and Finance; BSc in Electronic Engineering; and BSc in Forestry and Environment Management. We have a team of dedicated and experienced staff from both Bangor University and CSUFT. Through the past year’s hard work I am pleased to see that impressive progress has been made on Changsha campus. We have now 264 students registered with Bangor University from September this year, Congratulations! You are now not only students of CSUFT but Bangor University! I am also pleased to see that we have more than 180 new students who just begin your first year here. I wish every success on your first year’s study in Bangor College and hope to welcome you to join Bangor University next year!
Bangor University has invested heavily over the last three years on Bangor College. We are responsible for the quality of the programmes and will ensure that BCC’s teaching standards, assessments and student experience are equivalent to those at our Bangor home campus.
There will be many activities taking place between the Bangor student body and BCC student body in this academic year. The President of Bangor University Students Union will visit BCC to meet with BCC students in November and the Head of the Students Affairs of BCC will visit Bangor University later this year as well. They will discuss how to integrate BCC students into Bangor University students’ activities. I hope through the activities students on both campuses will become friends and exchange their study and living experiences in both Bangor and Changsha. For British students many will learn about China from BCC. A longer term ambition is to make BCC a study abroad centre for Bangor students. A real two way exchange to enhance the learning experience for all.
Of course, research collaboration is a priority also and we have already established research links in areas such as Chinese and Asian Studies, forestry and environmental science.
BCC provides a unique opportunity for our Chinese students. An international education close to home is an attractive model that works for students, family and for the universities. You have the best of both worlds – access to scholars of international standing in their fields without the high cost of living abroad.
China is now a major player on the world political and economic stages and it needs millions of highly skilled, well educated young people with an international outlook to further its ambition to be a world leading country. An international education is the passport to future success for all young people now. BCC provides that with a flexible and affordable model that has quality and student welfare at its heart.
For those who plan to spend some time in Bangor either for UG or PGT or both, it couldn’t be easier. The programmes are arranged in a way that allow students to transfer between campuses at the beginning of any academic year. With a good Bangor Bachelor’s degree, students will also be guaranteed a place for a suitable Masters course. So after 2-3 years of life here in Changsha, you could enjoy the old world charm of Bangor. Study in Harry Potter style library, attend a concert in 19thcentury old PJ Hall, barbeque on a white sandy beach followed by a swim in the Irish sea, hike in the breath taking Snowdonia national park, perhaps learn a few words of Welsh, and definitely you can take part in the many weekends trips organized by the International Centre to Liverpool, Chester, Manchester and soon.
I met a group of 23 BCC students at Bangor University during the summer. They are wonderful students. I hope they have enjoyed their experience in Bangor and Britain.
I wish you all well in your studies and look forward to seeing you in Bangor in near future.
